John's original training was in physics and the engineering sciences, having been a designer in electronic systems and an engineering physicist for approximately ten years.
In late 1989 John began studying for his doctorate at Loughborough University, which he attained early in March 1993.
John then trained extensively with the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy to ADHP level and was a fully registered member of the National Register of Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists (NRHP) from early 1996 until December 2004.
John also served on the then Governing Council of the NRHP. In 2004 John left the NRHP to join the National Hypnopsychotherapy Council, and is now a member of the Executive Committee. John has also been a full member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) since 1998.

John practices to the standards of the NRHP and UKCP. John supervises other therapists to UKCP guidelines.
Until April 2007, John served on the NHPC Executive Committee, but has had to devote all his time to an ever busy practice and works full time at the Loughborough practice during normal office hours.
